More than 100 Georgetown County employees at International Paper Company will be laid off as the plant prepares for permanent closure, according to a government report. The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act requires employers with at least 100 employees to provide at least 60 days' notice before implementing mass layoffs. South Carolina's latest WARN report indicates that 920 South Carolina workers will be impacted, including 126 employees at International Paper who will be laid off between May 1 and the end of the year. The latest terminations come after Memphis, Tennessee-based International Paper Company laid off nearly 700 Georgetown employees and announced it was shutting down the pulp and paper mill location in 2024. “This decision is especially difficult because of the impact on hard-working employees, their families and the surrounding communities,” Georgetown Mill Manager Bernie Chascin said at the time.
