European allies, with export-heavy sectors most exposed and domestically focused companies to be relative havens. The latest escalation risk comes on top of a 15% baseline tariff on most European Union goods that has been in place since August 2025. Trump has vowed to implement a wave of increasing tariffs on European allies until the United States is allowed to buy Greenland. Expert say U.S. tariffs on European products could rise to 25% as early as February 2026 and reach as high as 40% by June if tensions persist. French sectors with meaningful exposure to U.S. demand would be the main losers. These include automotive, capital goods, industrial equipment, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, consumer goods and selected luxury segments. Champagne, wines and spirits also stand out as vulnerable. Higher tariffs would directly undermine price competitiveness and weigh on volumes or margins, particularly where production for the U.S. market is not fully localised in the United States.
