(John Sleezer/Kansas City Star/TNS via Getty Images) The NASCAR Cup Series returns this weekend to Kansas Speedway, one of the McTracks that opened at the turn of the century to capitalize on stock-car racing’s popularity (and rake in mucho bucks). Exactly zero tracks have been added to the Cup schedule since then. Well, the Charlotte Motor Speedway built part of a road course last year to affix to part of its oval last year -- a success, by the way -- but that does not count, since the infrastructure was already there. Kansas Speedway’s first Cup race was on Sept. 30, 2001, almost 18 years ago! The race track at Rockingham, N.C., has been dumped from the Cup schedule since Kansas opened, although there has been considerable chatter about restoring the track at Rockingham to its former glorious state and perhaps attracting NASCAR races again.
