Currently in its fourth generation, the coupe has gone through numerous iterations and special editions over the past 35 years. It's so popular among enthusiasts and racing types that there are over a dozen countries that stage Miata one-make races. Now, the Hiroshima-based car company is going hardcore with two of its most popular marques—the Miata and the Mazda 3. At the recent 2024 Tokyo Auto Salon in January, Mazda made headlines again when it revealed an all-new sub-brand called Mazda Spirit Racing, and two new track-focused models in the Miata-based Spirit Racing RS and the Mazda3-based Spirit Racing 3. Mazda Spirit Racing also unveiled a hardcore Mazda3. Such a brand has not existed since the grand old days of the Mazdaspeed performance and customizing arm, which peaked in 1991 with victory at the 24-Hours of Le Mans in the 787B race car.
