So argues George Oliver, chairman and chief executive of Johnson Controls, one of the world's largest manufacturers of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and a leading building software provider. At least when it comes to the sector's operational emissions, such as lighting, cooling and heating, cost-effective solutions already exist. “We can typically take a building and reduce its energy by 30%, 40%, 50%, sometimes more,” he says. Yet Wisconsin-based Oliver, a 20-year veteran of General Electric and former chief executive of security systems firm Tyco (since merged with Johnson Controls), remains optimistic that a new willingness of the sector's key players to collaborate will help move the dial on the uptake of these technologies.
