The recent reopening of some stores, the pick-up of merchandise outside of leading stores, and the effort to open units in Texas by this weekend all point to an effort by retailers to restore some sense of business as usual in their stores. I hear that Macy’s plans to reopen stories in different areas, JC Penney will open stores in Nebraska, Oklahoma and Arkansas, and Neiman Marcus will also start having curbside pick-ups. Nordstrom appears to be following a ‘stay closed’ strategy but is filling orders from its full line stores.When you hear all this talk across states, it sounds like we might see open stores soon – but activity will vary and will depend on each state’s ordinances and agreements. Federal guidelines suggest reopening should happen only if there is evidence in a particular state that the incidence of COVID-19 is lower, that there are enough hospital beds should a second wave occur, and that social distancing, wearing of face masks, and other rules will be observed.
