Jobless claims fall slightly to 216,000 in week before Christmas; layoffs still very low The numbers: The number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits fell slightly in the week before Christmas, reflecting a vibrant U.S. labor market and the very low number of layoffs taking place during the holiday season. Initial jobless claims, a rough way to measure layoffs, slipped to 216,000 in the seven days ended Dec. 22, from a revised 217,000, the Labor Department said Thursday. The department remained open despite a partial government shutdown. Economists polled by MarketWatch had forecast a 217,000 reading. Claims are not as low as they were in September, but they remain near a 50-year bottom.
