This Wednesday, the Federal Reserve maintained the current federal funds rate unchanged as expected, marking the sixth time the Fed has held steady in this round of rate hikes. Two things are worth noting. First at the press conference following the rate decision, Fed's Chairman Powell stated that the Fed's next move is unlikely to be a rate hike. With Powell ruling out the possibility of a rate hike, overnight US stocks experienced significant volatility. The DJIA rose by over 500 points at its peak, then retraced, ultimately closing up 87 points. Secondly, the Fed also announced that it will slow down the pace of balance sheet reduction, known as its quantitative tightening (QT) plan, starting from June this year. The Fed's QT began in June 2022, aiming to reduce the size of its balance sheet by allowing its holdings of bonds to mature without reinvesting the proceeds into new bonds, thereby reducing liquidity in the market.
