He used them for connections, for money and for social capital, as we report inour new magazine article about Epstein’s originsOne of those women was Patricia Schmidt, a 23-year-old who worked at Bear Stearns and whose boss sent her to Epstein’s home in 1987. We interviewed Schmidt, who hasn’t previously spoken publicly about her relationship with Epstein, and she allowed us to publish pages from the diary she kept in the 1980s.The diary’s pages are littered with references to Epstein, providing a unique window into the many ways he sought to use this particular relationship for his advantage. (Schmidt kept the diary for several years, writing in dates by hand that don’t correspond with the book’s printed dates.)
