The bank is positioning ahead of a potential pickup in capital markets and deal activity. In meetings across Europe this year, JPMorgan executives said clients have struck a bullish tone on the outlook for deals and capital markets, underscoring the confidence behind the bank's decision to expand hiring in the region. This comes after Wall Street's largest banks collectively reduced net headcount by about 10,600 during the 2025 calendar year, the most significant industry contraction since 2016. The hiring push follows a period of strict expense management. On its recent earnings call , CFO Jeremy Barnum said the firm wants employees' "first reaction" to be something other than hiring, but added JPMorgan is still willing to fund incremental headcount where execution and long-term investment priorities require it. By leaning into European hiring, the firm is aiming to secure incremental share in investment banking and private wealth as conditions improve.
