That legacy changed on April 1, 1946, when industrialist Henry J. Kaiser, who was born in Spokane and later mastered his organizational skills by quickly building ships to support the nation's war effort, leased Trentwood and smelters in Mead and Tacoma to form a company he called Kaiser Aluminum.
