During the pandemic, empathy became more than a fundamental trait of successful leaders. We hoisted it into the defining characteristic of leadership. After retrofitting their teams and spaces for remote work, leaders pivoted to accommodate employees' other concerns. We called that being nice. However, as competitive and economic pressures increase, bosses are no longer prioritizing being nice. With labor and production costs rising, and revenue projections leveling or falling, CEOs are reverting to their core principles. In other words, no more nice boss. To which we say, nonsense. During the pandemic, leaders already predisposed to being empathetic had the personal tools to navigate the new environment. Those who weren't faced a challenging adjustment.
