in northwestern Ontario under its streamlined permit approval process, known as One Project, One Process, potentially accelerating the completion of one of Canada's largest new gold mines in decades. Located 24 kilometres southeast of Red Lake in a historic mining district, Great Bear is a planned open pit and underground mine that could produce about 500,000 ounces of gold per year for nearly a decade, according to a preliminary economic assessment. Kinross also projects further growth in later years, which would then rank the mine amongst the largest gold mines in operation in Canada. It has set a timeline for mine construction to begin in 2027, with first gold produced in 2029. “By fast-tracking Kinross Gold's Great Bear Project, we're getting shovels in the ground, proving that world-class projects can be built with speed and in partnership,” Stephen Lecce, Ontario's minister of energy and mines, said in a press release before a press conference in Mississauga, Ont.
