The new CEO of Kraft Heinz, Miguel Patricio, believes that a solution to the company’s dismally performing brands will be heavy investment in marketing. Kraft Heinz starved its brands to zombie-status using following 3G Capital’s financial engineering. His thinking is that the brands will now thrive by increasing marketing expenditures. This is an expensive fantasy. Marketing will not fix product quality problems. Marketing will not fix a lack of innovation. Marketing will not fix inferior brand value. Marketing will not fix poor management. Increased Kraft Heinz marketing is not a solution to their basic operational problems. It is at best a short-term cover up. Effective marketing will only attract customers who will be disappointed. Using marketing to increase awareness of poor quality, out-of-date offerings is misguided.
