Now — more than 53 years after that 1972 mission — the Artemis II astronauts should swing around the far side of the moon Monday , losing communications with Earth while venturing deeper into space than anyone in history. The crew expects to see lunar geologic features never glimpsed by human eyes while their Orion spacecraft passes about 4,066 miles above the moon's rock-strewn surface . NASA officials say that distance is so great that the moon's size will resemble a basketball held at arm's length. "I am incredibly excited, not only as a planetary scientist but as a human who loves just the exploration of the cosmos. I think this Artemis II step has the potential to be the pivot point in history where we become a spacefaring civilization," said Bethany Ehlmann, president of The Planetary Society. "Where we commit that we're going out there. And that we're going to have a presence from here on out on the moon , and then onward to Mars and beyond," Ehlmann said. The Artemis I
