The changes announced on Friday mean that NASA is swapping the actual moon landing for an additional mission closer to Earth — while insisting the 2028 deadline for a lunar touchdown remains unchanged. “We need to move faster, eliminate delays and achieve our objectives,” said Jared Isaacman, NASA's Administrator and a billionaire former fintech executive. Issacman's revamp, a mere two months into his tenure, comes as NASA faces criticism over mismanagement and spiraling costs in its effort to put humans back on the moon for the first time in more than 50 years. Artemis is estimated to have cost roughly $93 billion so far, and the latest mission that aims to take a crew around the moon has been delayed by weeks — and possibly months. Artemis III, which was supposed to be the moon landing and is now pulled forward to 2027, will see Boeing's Space Launch System rocket launch a crew aboard Lockheed Martin Corp.'s Orion capsule.
