Californians may soon see a powerful rocket blazing across the sky that is brighter and more widely visible than what is typical. That would be the Vulcan rocket , a heavy-lift launch vehicle developed by the Colorado-based United Launch Alliance. The spacecraft is one people in Florida have already become acquainted with over the course of four launches since 2024 – the most recent of which got off the ground in February. Launching Feb. 12 atop a staggering 3 million pounds of thrust, the 202-foot-tall Vulcan and its four solid rocket boosters mounted to the side put on quite a show across Florida as it thundered high above Earth to deploy U.S. Space Force satellites nearly 90 times higher in orbit than the International Space Station Now, that same rocket is set to make a West Coast debut The United Launch Alliance, a joint venture between Boeing and Lockheed Martin, has designs for Vulcan to become the rocket of choice for military, civil and commercial customers.
