Capt. Tim Hawkins, a spokesperson for U.S. Central Command, said the fifth-generation stealth jet was “flying a combat mission over Iran” when it was forced to make an emergency landing, according to the media outlet. Hawkins said the aircraft landed safely and the incident is under investigation. F-35s are among the nation's newest aircraft and are among the most expensive to build. Here's what to know about the jets. What is an F-35? The first version of the aircraft built by Lockheed Martin is the F-35A Lightning II. The single-person jet is 51.4 feet long, 14.4 feet high and has a wingspan of 35 feet. The jets weigh 29,300 pounds empty, can carry 18,250 pounds of fuel and an additional 18,000 pounds of weapons. The F-35 is designed to replace U.S. Air Force F-16s and A-10s, U.S. Navy F/A-18s, U.S. Marine Corps AV-8B Harriers and F/A-18s, and U.K. Harrier GR.7s and Sea Harriers, Lockheed-Martin said.
