The 2018 IFA Technology show in Berlin is upon us. And while Samsung might have stolen the early TV-related headlines with posters around the IFA venue talking about 8K, arch rival LG has become the first brand to officially reveal an 8K TV. What’s more, this 8K debutante is an OLED set, not an LCD TV one. In case you don’t know, 8K TVs squeeze 7680x4320 pixels into their screens compared with 3840x2160 pixels in a 4K TV. That’s 33,177,600 pixels versus 8,294,400 - or four times as much resolution. Some question the need for so much resolution, especially given the lack of native 8K content and the inevitable issues with distributing 8K content. With 8K TVs predicted to account for more than five million units by as soon as 2022, though, it’s clear that 8K is set to become a potent force in the consumer electronics world, whether consumers currently feel the need for it or not.
