U.S. stocks surged on Feb. 6 in a stunning turnaround that saw the blue-chip Dow soar more than 1,000 points to pierce the 50,000 mark for the first time ever. "The Dow reaching 50,000 is less about celebration and more about confirmation," said Gina Bolvin, president of Bolvin Wealth Management Group, in an email. "Markets have adjusted to higher rates, slower growth, and global uncertainty—and still moved higher. That tells us confidence is real, and 2026 will be less about the ( Federal Reserve ) and more about fundamentals." After steep losses earlier in the week, investors decided that the sell-off was overdone and returned to the market. A jump in the University of Michigan's consumer sentiment survey to the highest level since August and drop in short-term inflation expectations to 3.5%, the lowest level in just over a year, also helped.
