AT&T (NYSE:T) is acquiring Lumen Technologies' consumer fiber business for US$5.75b. The deal includes Lumen's fiber network and customer relationships, expanding AT&T's fiber footprint. AT&T plans to place these assets into a new commercial open access fiber subsidiary. The company expects to sell a stake in this new subsidiary to outside investors. For AT&T, fiber sits at the core of its broadband and connectivity business. This deal adds scale with millions of additional locations and subscribers. It arrives as telecom and cable operators compete for high speed residential and business internet customers, with fiber often positioned as a key technology for bandwidth hungry applications.
