In a statement published April 17, the company said it is “not engaged with or interested in any discussions regarding a merger with United Airlines” and added that a combination with United would be “negative for competition and for consumers.” Reuters reported earlier that United CEO Scott Kirby had raised the idea of a tie-up with American in a February meeting with President Trump, which helped fuel the merger speculation in the first place.
