The Dallas-based carrier is raising its baggage fees to $45 for the first checked bag and $55 for the second, up $10 from the original fees. Southwest, the airline with the second-most flight capacity at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, follows JetBlue, United Airlines and Delta Air Lines in hiking bag fees in recent days. Their moves coincided with the cost of jet fuel nearly doubling after the war in Iran began. Checking up to two bags on Southwest was free for many years, even as its competitors charged to check bags, until baggage fees were introduced in May 2025 under pressure from the activist investor Elliott Investment Management.
