Our parents asked all four kids if this would be OK and we agreed that it would be fine. Initially, we discussed that the price would be fair market value, but she claimed she would only be able to afford a maximum of $3 million and said that the house would still be in the family. This is not the home we grew up in, and I'm not sure any of us could afford to visit more than once every five years. That said, my siblings and I got tired of the whining and agreed that she would only have to pay the lesser of $3 million or the appraised price of the house. Ultimately, the money from the sale of the house will go into mom's trust account and be used to help her until her final days.
