The £575m takeover of The Telegraph by Axel Springer is moving into the regulatory process just days after it was agreed. Lisa Nandy, the Culture Secretary, said it was of “paramount importance to me that a resolution is reached without further delay” as “the ongoing uncertainty is detrimental to the stability of The Telegraph and particularly for its staff”. She received on a formal application from RedBird IMI on Friday for permission to transfer the security over The Telegraph that it has held since December 2023 to Axel Springer. The financial instrument is designed to be immediately converted into full ownership. RedBird IMI, a venture mostly funded by the United Arab Emirates, was blocked from carrying out the move by new laws banning foreign state influence over newspapers.
