In a memo to employees, Macy's CEO Tony Spring said the initiative, “Bold New Chapter,” was working and the New York-based chain is seeing improved results over the first three quarters of its new fiscal year. However, he said, “in executing our strategy, we continue to review our portfolio and make careful decisions about where and how we invest, including closing underproductive stores and streamlining operations.” “These decisions are not made lightly,” Springs wrote. The locations will close after clearance sales, which are expected to begin in mid-January and last approximately 10 weeks. Macy's currently operates 420 stores, including one in Alabama at the Riverchase Galleria. In 2025, Macy's announced i t was closing 66 “unproductive” locations.
