Questor relishes nothing more than an opportunity to buy high-quality stocks when they face significant temporary challenges. While other investors may prefer to wait for company, industry or economic-related difficulties to pass, this column would rather accept the prospect of heightened uncertainty over the short run in order to buy troubled companies at lower prices. After all, doing so is likely to lead to far higher returns over the long term. Although Marks & Spencer's much-publicised cyber attack may not appear to have prompted a period of significantly weaker share price performance at first glance, the FTSE 100 retailer has substantially underperformed its sector peers of late. Indeed, while its share price has fallen by 10pc since it first reported the attack on April 22, the market valuation of fellow clothing and home retailer Next has increased by 5pc.
