Four years after their Saudi Arabia takeover , Newcastle United are probably at least a decade away from realising their ultimate ambition. That will jar with Public Investment Fund chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan , whose stated aim is to be the number one club in England. But it is time for a healthy dose of realism, not least within PIF itself. During a board meeting at a Northumberland hotel earlier this year, Al-Rumayyan was presented with a vision for the future, asking all departments to present their plans for growth and improvement. Newcastle's chairman wanted success and he wanted it quickly. The idea was to be in a position to compete for the Premier League title and for European honours within five years. It all sounded impressive and exciting, but while it is fine to have lofty goals, the truth is Newcastle are still a long way behind the legacy “big six”.
