They are well known, well established and have a proven track record of success. But all of those big franchise names started out life as single units or locations and it took their first franchisees to take a real leap of faith to invest to set them on the path to franchise fame. The very first McDonald's franchisee was Neil Fox, a former distributor with General Petroleum Corporation, who signed on the dotted line in 1953 when the now-famous golden arches were still just a sketch on a piece of paper in the hands of the McDonald brothers. The whole story of the burger chain giant might have been very different had Fox not decided to take a chance with an emerging franchise brand. One of the major attractions of investing in a franchise is that it is generally seen to be lower risk than starting up an independent venture from scratch.
