The fast-food chain is gradually removing self-serve soda fountains from its restaurants across the United States. The company plans to complete the change by 2032, meaning customers will no longer pour their own drinks in dining rooms. Instead, workers will prepare drinks behind the counter and hand them to customers. For decades, self-serve drink stations were a common part of the McDonald's experience. Customers received an empty cup and filled it themselves at machines in the dining room with soda, tea or other beverages. The change marks the end of self-service beverage stations that many restaurants adopted widely in the late 20th century. McDonald's says the decision is meant to create a more consistent experience for customers.
