Scotland will issue government bonds for the first time in more than three centuries after it was awarded the same credit rating as the UK. Holyrood said it was on course to take advantage of powers granted a decade ago that will allow the country to tap debt markets for up to £1.5bn over the rest of the parliament. The bonds, to be known as “kilts” in an echo of “gilts”, will be awarded the same credit score as the UK after two leading rating agencies Moody's and S&P gave Scotland high investment grade ratings. The ruling Scottish National Party (SNP) – which had been struggling in the polls – has characterised bond sales as a way of building credibility as it seeks new ways to fund infrastructure investment.
