The second-largest city in the U.S. just took a major step toward 100% carbon-free power. Los Angeles officially stopped using coal-generated electricity , and beginning next month, will instead use power that is generated from turbines with a blend of natural gas and hydrogen. Eventually, the goal is to transition completely to hydrogen , part of the single-largest green hydrogen project in the world, according to David Hanson, who manages power projects for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. The overall outlook for carbon-free, green hydrogen in the U.S. is dim, with a lack of federal support and higher production costs, but the city's experiment is a bright spot.
