Microsoft working on new large AI model to compete with Google, OpenAI: report [Seeking Alpha]

The model, known internally as MAI-1, is being worked on by a team led by Mustafa Suleyman, who was hired by Microsoft in March to help run its new consumer AI unit. Suleyman previously founded DeepMind, which was bought by Google, and was most recently the CEO of AI startup Inflection AI. Inflection raised some funding from Microsoft in June 2023 before the Satya Nadella-led tech giant eventually hired the majority of its staff and paid $650M for the rights to its intellectual property in March. Microsoft did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Seeking Alpha. It is expected that MAI-1 will be "far larger" than the other open source models that Microsoft has trained, with roughly 500B parameters, The Information added , citing people familiar with the matter. GPT-4, the newest model from OpenAI (which Microsoft has invested billions of dollars in), is believed to have more than 1T parameters, according to Hacker News .
