Mention the erstwhile telecom giant to young Canadians, and you might get nothing more than a blank stare or perhaps a quick Google search. Among Canadians of a certain age, however, the name alone conjures up a complex web of emotions. First, because Northern Telecom, as it was once known, was such a steady presence in our homes: Since its founding in 1895, it furnished everything from stoves to washing machines to TV sets to (of course) telephones.
