When a group of friends in their 50s get together, there is one question that inevitably comes up: When are you going to retire? For many, the answer may be: “Never.” The traditional idea of retirement – a paid-off home, a steady pension and time spent travelling or enjoying the outdoors at a cottage – feels increasingly out of reach for a growing number of Canadians. A recent report from Manulife, The 40-year retirement: Balancing dollars and dreams , surveyed more than 2000 workers and retirees in 2025. Forty-two per cent of Canadian workers said they are worried about being able to pay for basic expenses in retirement, while 48 per cent said their retirement savings are behind schedule. Also, 43 per cent said they are worried about health care costs in retirement – a 12 per cent increase from the same question in 2020. This view is not limited to Gen X (aged 44 to 57).
