A new report criticizes gaming giant MGM Resorts International, among several other large U.S. corporations, for using social safety net assistance as corporate welfare, contributing to the affordability crisis and enriching CEOs while paying poverty wages to workers. The Institute for Policy Studies (IPS) report analyzes the 20 largest employers of low-wage US workers that are a part of the S&P 500, called the “Low-Wage 20.” A total of 6.7 million workers in the US are employed with Low-Wage 20 companies. MGM was the only company listed in the report that is headquartered in Nevada. Median annual pay at each of the companies on the list was below , the income needed to afford the U.S. average rent for a two-bedroom apartment, according to the Census Bureau. The 20 companies also had CEO-to-worker pay ratios well above the S&P 500 average of 285 to 1.
