Researchers and environmentalists fear a proposed expansion of a limestone quarry in northern New Hanover County could increase flood risks, further stress local waterways, and damage important ecological habitats. Martin Marietta Materials is seeking permission to expand the mining on its 1,400-acre quarry snuggled between Holly Shelter Road and the Northeast Cape Fear River east of Castle Hayne. In information submitted to the Army Corps of Engineers Wilmington District as part of its permit application , the company says it wants to expand the mining operation by 358 acres north and east of the existing quarry areas. Wetlands and other water bodies that wouldn't be impacted would increase the project's overall size to 732 acres. "Castle Hayne currently has limited available reserves to supply the growing market it serves in the medium to long term," the application states.
