On the face of it, it is a struggle between bosses who want their employees in their workplaces where they can see them and workers who argue that the technology that enables them to continue to work after they leave the office should also allow them to work more flexibly, in terms of both hours and location. Of course, it is not quite as simple as that. Many organizations have long encouraged office-based employees especially to work remotely at least part of the time, while others have insisted — not unreasonably — that production workers need to be on site in the way that they have always been.
