Altria Group Inc. said Chairman and Chief Executive Howard Willard, who was recovering from COVID-19, is stepping down after 28 years with the company. His retirement is effective April 14. The cigarette and smokeless tobacco seller said it named Vice Chairman and Chief Financial Officer Billy Gifford as its CEO. The company said its board of directors has decided to separate the roles of chairman and CEO. Thomas Farrell, formerly the independent presiding director, was elected to become independent chairman. Sal Mancuso, formerly senior vice president of finance and procurement, was elected to be the new CFO. Altria's stock, which rose 2.0% in premarket trading, has lost 19.1% year to date through Thursday, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average has dropped 17.5%.
