getty Worst could become best if the share price collapse of Australia's biggest gold mining company, Northern Star Resources, is reversed over the next six months as some investment banks believe will happen. Multiple production downgrades, which preceded the recent sharp fall in the price of gold, have sparked an investor exodus from the stock which has fallen by 40% over the past month easily eclipsing a 15% fall in the gold price over the same time. The crisis at Northern Star started with a fumbled upgrade of the company's major source of gold, the Fimiston open pit on the outskirts of Western Australia's gold capital Kalgoorlie. An operation under different names and management for more than 120 years the mine is deep and has been hampered in recent years by ageing plant and ore milling equipment.
