Related news Merck stock tumbled Tuesday after the Dow Jones pharmaceutical company forecast an impact from the coronavirus pandemic that would last two fiscal quarters. For 2020, Merck ( MRK ) now expects $46.1 billion to $48.1 billion in sales and adjusted earnings of $5.17-$5.37 per share. At the midpoint of its forecast, sales would grow a fraction. Profit would rise 1.5%. Merck stands out as an exception among pharmaceutical companies, Evercore ISI analyst Umer Raffat said in a report to clients. Early Tuesday, Pfizer ( PFE ) and Novartis ( NVS ) retained their guidance for the full year despite the ongoing coronavirus pandemic . "In that backdrop, Merck stands out as an exception," he said. "But let's be clear: Merck's business is fundamentally different. While the long-term outlook is unchanged, Merck is very reliant on physician-administered drugs and they have an animal health business."
