?Jonathan Agnew, who has died aged 84, was an agile and high-principled City financier as chief executive of the merchant bank Kleinwort Benson, chairman of the Nationwide building society and a pioneer of corporate participation in the Lloyd's insurance market. Born into a distinguished line of West End art ?dealers, Agnew chose banking as his career and made his mark as a young director of the US firm of Morgan Stanley in Paris and London. In 1987 he was recruited by Kleinworts to bring management backbone to its securities operation, newly created under the City's “Big Bang” ownership reforms by the acquisition of the stockbroker Grieveson Grant and the addition of a team of jobbers from Wedd Durlacher. Two years later, he was promoted to group chief executive, with a vision to build an integrated investment bank on the Wall Street model.
