company Belardi Wong, I learned that consumers are trading down and economizing. It seems that customers are shopping cautiously; luxury customers are looking at premium brands, upscale customers are exploring middle-range brands, and low-end customers have traded down to Walmart . Everyone seems to be carefully monitoring their spending today. Suppliers have been impacted by this changing consumer behavior. Polly sees a major shift among manufacturers. On one hand, she says that established brands with substantial revenues ($25 million and more) are benefitting from whatever confidence consumers have while new, emerging brands find business much harder to get. Part of the reason is that established brands have a far larger consumer base that they can use to market their products to, and they also have greater resources to put behind marketing at this time of need.
