The company is closing 51 health centers in five states and a virtual care offering. Walmart's management feels that this health initiative is not a sustainable business. “We understand that this change will affect lives – the patients who receive care, the associates and providers who deliver care, and the communities who supported us along the way,” the company said in a blog post. “This is a difficult decision, and like others, the challenging reimbursement environment and escalating operating costs create a lack of profitability that makes the care business unsustainable for us at this time.” Walmart does not yet have a specific date when each health center will close, but said it is focused on continuity of care for patients and providing impacted associates with assistance as closures begin.
