FCC’s chairman takes step to improve rural broadband mapping Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai said Wednesday that the FCC will vote in August on an order to improve the agency’s much-criticized broadband maps. The FCC’s maps have been blasted for overstating how many places in the country have access to high-speed internet. This problem arises because a census block is considered covered if a provider says it could deliver service there “without an extraordinary commitment of resources.” Read more: It’s Microsoft vs. Comcast in push to expand rural broadband Pai said during a Senate Commerce Committee hearing that the upcoming order will require providers to report where they offer service at a more granular level, not just by census block.
