At the center of the case is a claim that Microsoft charged British businesses more to run Windows Server on rival cloud platforms such as Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud and Alibaba Cloud than it did on its own Azure platform. Lawyers behind the case argue that those higher costs made competing services less attractive and unfairly pushed customers toward Azure. The lawsuit was brought on behalf of nearly 60,000 UK businesses, and the claim has been valued at as much as 2.1 billion pounds, or about $2.8 billion. Microsoft had tried to stop the case before trial, arguing that the claim did not clearly show how losses could be calculated. But the Competition Appeal Tribunal decided the case could proceed, which is an early but important win for the claiman
