Morgan Stanley analyst Megan Alexander believes challenging weather trends in Vail's newer regions over the last few years adds increased volatility to earnings. She also warned that heightened competition in the U.S. and a nascent Europe strategy limits visibility to unit growth re-acceleration. Currently, Alexander and the MS analyst team see the unit growth story for Vail Resorts ( MTN ) as approaching somewhat of an impasse with the U.S. largely a market share game. While the company has grown its network to ~2.4M pass holders representing ~20% of overall North American industry participants, unit growth has slowed more recently. Driving higher penetration in the U.S. is seen as challenging for Vail Resorts ( MTN ) given the limited remaining M&A opportunities, which pushes the focus to Europe as a significant white space growth opportunity.
