Asian markets fall ahead of Fed meeting, trade talks Asian markets were down in early trading Monday, ahead of an expected rate cut by the Fed later this week. High-level trade talks between the U.S. and China are also scheduled to resume this week for the first time since early May, but expectations of a major breakthrough are low. Japan’s Nikkei NIK, -0.55% slipped 0.5% and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index HSI, -1.15% slid 1.3%. The Shanghai Composite SHCOMP, -0.12% declined 0.2%, while South Korea’s Kospi 180721, -1.92% tumbled 1.7%. Benchmark indexes in Taiwan Y9999, -0.14% , Singapore STI, -0.67% and Indonesia JAKIDX, -0.23% all fell, while Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 XJO, +0.33% bucked the regional trend, rising 0.2%. Among individual stocks, SoftBank 9984, +2.33% gained in Tokyo trading, while Sony 6758, -1.48% and Hitachi 6501, -3.08% fell.
