Gold up or dollar down? That’s a question which will be asked often in 2020 as the value of the dollar slips against other major currencies, boosting gold because that’s how the yellow metal is widely traded. Whatever the correct answer to the gold up/dollar down question the effect on the share prices of gold mining companies over the past month has been electric. Newmont Goldcorp, the world’s biggest gold producer, has seen its share price rise by 11.2% over the past month from $38.40 to $42.71 at the close on Friday in New York. Barrick Gold, the world’s second biggest gold producer, is up 9.2% from $16.80 to $18.37 over the past month. Those share price moves easily outperform the underlying gold price which is up 3.5% over the past month from $1460 an ounce to $1511/oz. One reason for the gold miners beating the gold price is that every extra dollar on the price goes directly to the bottom line profit of the producers.
