Crude oil futures rose about 30% from a December low to an almost six-month high last week. Though they're since pared some of those gains, the possibility of a deepening conflict between Israel and Iran suggests the rally may have room to run. Oil jumped on Friday on reports of unverified explosions in Iran, Syria and Iraq. That's bad news for yen bulls: a 10% gain in oil prices will help pull down the currency by 3 to 4 yen against the dollar on an annual basis, according to estimates by Yujiro Goto, head of Japan currency strategy at Nomura Securities Co. The yen has been the worst-performing major currency this year, tumbling to a three-decade low against the dollar. Dragging it down is the wide yield gap between Japan and other major economies such as the US, and expectations that the Bank of Japan will raise interest rates only modestly while a Federal Reserve cut may be delayed. “Japan is totally dependent on imports for oil, so price increases lead to higher energy bill
